From the works of others

Jules Verne's two novels gave us President Barbicane and the Gun Club (adapted as Professor Barbenfouillis and the Astronomers Club) as well as the concepts of the space cannon, spashdown, etc. The first editions of these texts were embellished by Henri de Montaut (From the Earth to the Moon) and Emile-Antoine Bayard (Round the Moon) -

Claude A. Shepperson did the original illustrations for First Men in the Moon. His drawings gave us a view of the Selenites and the giant mushrooms which were eventually to find their way into A Trip to the Moon -

Many of Verne's ideas were adapted into Jacques Offenbach's work and quite probably influenced Melies' creative process. While not Offenbach's most well-known production, it was popular enough to have been staged in the Royal Alhambra Theatre in London, Booth's Theater in New York City, the Theater an der Wein and of course the Gaite-Lyrique in Paris -

Albert A. Hopkins in his magic book discussed Edison's Kinetoscope and the early motion picture cameras of Lumiere and others. He also demonstrated how an "illustrated lecture" entitled A Trip to the Moon could be performed -
